First, I restate it in my own words: I need to find two different positions in the array where the values at those positions sum to my target number, and I need to return those positions. Inputs are an integer array of at least two elements and an integer target. Output is a pair of indices. Can I use the same element twice? No, different indices are required. Is the array sorted? The problem doesn’t say, so I assume no. Multiple solutions? Problem guarantees exactly one solution exists.

I work through an example manually. Array is [2, 7, 11, 15] and target is 9. Let me think: 2 plus what gives me 9? That’s 7. Do I have a 7? Yes, at index 1. So my answer is [0, 1]. Another example: [3, 2, 4] with target 6. I need 3 plus 3, which would be the same element twice, not allowed. Or 2 plus 4, which is at indices 1 and 2. That works.

Edge cases to consider: array with exactly two elements (the minimum), duplicates in the array (like [3, 3] with target 6), negative numbers (do they work the same way? yes), very large arrays (need efficient solution).

Looking back phase. Testing: does it work with [2, 7, 11, 15] and target 9? I trace through: see 2, complement is 7, not in map yet, store 2 at index 0. See 7, complement is 2, which is in map at index 0, return [0, 1]. Correct. What about [3, 3] with target 6? See first 3, complement is 3, not in map, store it. See second 3, complement is 3, it’s in map at index 0, return [0, 1]. Correct. Edge cases all work.

Complexity analysis: time is linear because I make one pass through the array, and hash map operations are constant time on average. Space is linear because in the worst case I store every element. Could I do better? Not really, because I need to examine every element at least once, and I need to remember what I’ve seen. This is optimal for the general case.

Pattern recognition: this is a “complement search” pattern. The same approach works for many problems where you’re looking for pairs that meet some criteria. Two Sum variations, subarray problems, certain substring problems. Anytime you’re looking for something and can calculate what its complement should be, this pattern might apply.

Key insight: trading space for time with a hash map is often worth it. Hash maps are powerful for “have I seen this before” questions. The ability to look up previous values in constant time enables single-pass solutions for many problems.

In interviews specifically, silent problem-solving is a trap. You work quietly, head down, hoping to emerge with a perfect solution. But interviewers can’t read your mind. They don’t know if you’re stuck or thinking or confused. Narrate your process. “I’m considering a hash map here because I need fast lookups.” “Let me test this logic with a simple example.” “I’m handling this edge case by checking for empty input first.” This communication makes the interview collaborative instead of an examination.

Ignoring complexity analysis is a trap that catches people who focus entirely on correctness. Your solution works, great, but will it scale? Stating complexity forces you to understand your solution’s performance characteristics. If it’s suboptimal, acknowledge it and explain what the trade-offs are or how you’d optimize further.

Building the Habit Through Practice

The framework isn’t magic. It’s a skill that requires practice, like any other skill. You can’t read about it once and expect it to stick. You have to internalize it through repetition until it becomes second nature.

Deliberate practice means focusing on one aspect at a time until it becomes automatic. Spend a week where you focus entirely on the understanding phase. For every problem you attempt, force yourself to spend five full minutes just understanding before doing anything else. Write down inputs, outputs, constraints, edge cases. After ten or fifteen problems, this becomes habit.
